What Types of Fish Can I Catch in the Gulf of Mexico?

July 3, 2018

The Gulf of Mexico is one of the most unique and ecologically diverse bodies of water in the Western Hemisphere. The region boasts a number of interesting—and delicious—specimens. If you’re considering joining one of the best fishing trips in Pensacola, FL, you should first study the different types of fish you may be able to catch during your expedition. Because different types of fish are more active at varying times of each day and year, the type of fish you may want to catch could ultimately determine when you go on your fishing expedition.

While most of the fish you’ll encounter in the Gulf of Mexico are edible and desirable to catch, you may also encounter sea life that’s simply interesting to look at. It’s common to see dolphins, sea turtles and sharks while fishing in the Gulf.

Here are just a few of the types of fish you may encounter during your Gulf of Mexico fishing trip:

  • Red snapper:
This highly prized fish is also highly regulated. Red snappers are a reef fish prized for their feisty spirit and delicious flesh. Typically, red snappers can grow as long as three feet, and weigh as much as 40 pounds.
  • Wahoo:
These fish move quickly, and travel out in deep, open waters. Wahoo are also prized by sportsmen for being difficult to catch. Wahoo boast a long, lean body that allows them to sail through the water with ease. Wahoo grow as long as four feet in length and 60 pounds in weight.
  • Yellowtail snapper:
Yellowtail snappers are commonly found at restaurants throughout the Gulf region, and for good reason—they’re known for being simple to cook and delicious to eat. These fish are typically found further south in the Gulf, closer to the Florida Keys.
  • Dolphinfish:
Also called Mahi Mahi, dolphinfish is known for the high quality of its deep red flesh. Dolphinfish typically grow to three feet in length, and weigh roughly 40 pounds.
  • Barracuda:
These feisty fighters aren’t something you’ll want to catch intentionally—their flesh is often toxic! Barracuda are known for attacking fish that you may have on the line. Be careful if you draw up a barracuda while fishing—these fish grow as long as four feet, and they know how to bite!
  • King mackerel:
Boasting a distinctive flavor, mackerel are also prized as a game fish. Mackerel is popular at seafood restaurants. Many mackerel grow as long as five feet, and weigh up to 50 pounds.
